The Astani

The Civilization of the Astani

Introduction

At their earliest establishments, the Astanians began the formation of their first and greatest city, Validus in the fertile lands of what is now known as the Kingdom of Fortis towards the far west.  While regarded as excellent traders throughout Sominia, the Astanians originally used this ability to benefit themselves and the Corsani.  In the earliest of history, the initial kingdom was known as Astana before it was later dissolved into three independent nations.

Eventually, settlers traveled throughout Astana creating colonies and settlements, allowing more trade routes, and ultimately sea routes to Mystis. As scholars began to discover the ability and use of general magic from a scientific standpoint, outside the scope and purview of the residual mystical elements resulting in furthering political change.

The Astanian culture predates to over 10,000 years in the current notation of the Standard Era (SE)

Language

Somini also known as Trifecta-tongued (or language of those who live under the rule of the Trifecta) is spoken by all Astanians.

Kingdoms Settled:

*see note below

Author Note: Contrivi due to the historical context of a civil war is equally settled by both Corsani and Astanians and is often referred in present context to a Corsani kingdom.

Habitat & Population

Grasslands, Temperate Forests, Mountain ranges, rivers, moderate vegetation. Wood and Stone built homes and structures dependent on location and resources. Glass windows are common.

Most homes are fashioned simplistically with preference to function over style. Homes are very quaint, with common for a fireplace or simplistic hearth, artwork, crafted blankets piled over wooden chairs and other furniture. Beds and other wooden surfaces are carved with simplistic intentions. Rooms are divided into basic living areas: Kitchen for cooking, bedrooms for sleeping, washroom, and living/common rooms.

Philosophy

The worship of the Goddess of Creation; the Goddess that oversees the world and its balances; Matriarchal teachings based around the focus of natural way of the world; a focus towards a world with Magic restrained (Magic is said to have been left over from the creation of Sominia and therefore Holy per creation myths for the world). Also, believes that the Mystic elements (Mana in all of its forms) corrupt the soul or spirit which results in consequences of one’s reincarnation.

On the philosophy of Reincarnation: Both the Divinae Sect and those following of Magia believe in reincarnation or recycling of souls back into the world unless a soul is deemed corrupted or at the end of its span of rebirths.

Author Note: The philosophy is designed in the intention that all souls are reincarnated three or more times dependent on their worldly actions. i.e. a Hero or person of faith is reborn again more times than one who is evil or corrupted by the elements, which would be purged under most cases at the end of the third rebirth.

When a spirit is reborn, some memories are thought to be intact from the previous life cycle and said to influence one’s way through life and/or dream states.

Political System:

3 Divisions of the Trifecta Governmental System: Sect of Divinae, Order of the Guardians, Arcana Association.  Used by most of the countries on the Astana Continent except Corsano & Contrivi – they use a variation of the system)  A ladder of power based on matriarchal enforced rule with emphasis on restriction of Magi and use of magic. Religion dominance in government over military and magical research based branches.

Laws and set regulations in use of magic is confined to three of the four known arts and sub-variants classifications: Holy, Arcane, and Combat Arts.  Emphasis in Holy Arts for control and oversight of Magi (in particular anti-casting techniques and restraining methods)

Social System

A lot of the highly-regarded families place value in their name and place in society. Emphasis on passing knowledge, talents, trade skills to each surpassing generation is kept within family branches with priority of continuing of legacy. Some of the ancient families have strict traditional methods to preserve their main branch lines and hereditary roots.

Younger family branch names don’t carry such strict values as the Ancient lineages such as the Steffans who were one of the only surviving family lines that can be traced to the origination and creation of the Trifecta based system.

Generational continuity of trades and jobs with crafters following their prior generation’s same specialty or trade. (i.e. a father who was trained in blacksmithing meant that most likely a child would continue the trade).

Abandoning your family’s trade is not common and looked down upon. Children are raised equally by both genders within a family unit including elder generations who would assist in a child’s education.

Trade and Economics

Before the end of last Great War, one of the Astanian civilization’s most prized industries is its metalworking and weaponsmithing. Common for mulch-generational family professions handed down especially with the more old and established family lines.

Example: One of the world’s more notable modern geniuses/master crafter with weaponsmithing, particularly in enchanted blades was from a well-known family line (Aimeth). With the War’s toll on the continent of Astana, the metalworking economy and trade was nearly decimated.

Astanians are also regarded for their animal husbandry and farming professions. They rarely have food and resource based issues.

Woodworking is common.

Military & War Style

Based on their governmental system of aggressive oversight of Magi, Astanians can be seen sometimes as aggressive and quick acting.

Troops without an affinity for magic were placed into a general battalion rank system that limits those without magic affinity’s career obtainment. Very organized and set in traditions and values as a military formation with emphasis on discipline.

Martial skills of grappling, close combat skills, and a heavy emphasis on melee striking and/or stabbing weapons. They believe in traditional values of always keeping one’s honor on a battlefield, preferring to avoid dirty tactics unless needed to gain a upper hand in a dire situation. Very traditional based fighting and combat tactics mostly centered on non-magic based training as well as for some specialties of military ranks: Anti-Magi tactics (Sentinel ranks).

Some are trained in ranged weapon skills such as archery usually from when they have a background in hunting prior to any military training combat or tense diplomatic situations. In combat, Astanians are rather balanced in approach and tactics/strategies, notably on battlefields.

Culture

Astanians were ancient stonecutters; sculpture, inscriptions, religious rune stones, and architecture. With the tide of new technology and metalworking, stone-cutting is a bit of a lost art. They will never be as good at it as they once were.
